As a child, Tasneem Majeed (Tas) was shy, bubbly and anxious by nature. She started feeling unsafe in her home when her brother, who suffers from severe autism, started lashing out at the family. This, together with her parents’ focus on him, led to her developing a lot of built-up resentment.
At 16, she started having anxiety during exams and lost her motivation to study. Her form teacher persuaded her to visit the school counsellor. To manage her anxiety, Tas visited the school counsellor once every six weeks.
She credits her recovery to her teachers who helped her a lot at school. Today, Tas provides peer support for those with anxiety and panic attacks, going through similar experiences as her. As a mental health advocate, she is involved in peer support programmes with Caregivers Alliance Limited and Resilience Collective, as well as other peer support volunteering work like school outreach and talks.
If you or anyone you know is overwhelmed with stress or anxiety, or is experiencing signs of mental health conditions, find the help you need via Belle, Beyond the Label helpbot. Take the first step to recovery by seeking help early.
