Austen
Austen's story: A young musician with Autism Spectrum Disorder, he finds joy and expression through music, nurtured by his mother Vanecia's dedication as both a piano teacher and supportive parent.
Vanecia, a dedicated piano teacher and loving mother to Austen, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder, has played a crucial role in nurturing Austen's musical talent. From a young age, Austen showed a remarkable sensitivity to sounds, effortlessly mastering piano tunes after hearing them just once.
In addition to Vanecia's support at home, Austen attends Rainbow Centre Admiral Hill School (RCAHS), a special education school supported by Community Chest. At RCAHS, Austen learns essential skills such as emotional regulation, numeracy, literacy, and daily living, which helps him in both his academic progress and social integration into the community. With the encouragement and support of his teachers, Austen has made significant personal strides, earning the 2019 Special Talent Award for his musical abilities—a proud achievement for both mother and son!
Today, Vanecia leverages her Specialist Diploma in Teaching and Supporting Children with Special Needs from the ACC Institute of Human Services to better understand Austen's needs and care for him. As a CAREbuddy with CaringSG she connects with fellow caregivers, including parents at RCAHS who are facing similar challenges, to share insights and offer hope and encouragement. Her advocacy for Austen and others like him exemplifies the impact of community support on individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
